Hungary has received two new JAS 39 Gripen C fighter jets from Sweden, completing the delivery of four aircraft acquired under a contract signed in February 2024.

With the arrival of the new jets, the Hungarian Air Force now operates a fleet of 18 Gripen C/D aircraft, consisting of 16 single-seat Gripen C fighters and two twin-seat Gripen D variants, according to information shared by Militarnyi.

The acquisition is part of Hungary’s Armed Forces modernization program and enhances the country’s ability to protect its airspace while contributing to NATO missions.

Hungary has operated the Gripen since 2006. The agreement signed with Sweden in 2024 not only added four aircraft to the existing fleet but also secured logistical and operational support for the fighters over the next decade.

The new aircraft were delivered in the latest Gripen C/D standard, including upgrades to the PS-05/A Mk4 radar, enhanced Link 16 data link capabilities, and identification systems compliant with the latest NATO standards.

According to Saab, the partnership with Hungary also includes investments in an aerospace development center in the country, allowing Budapest to play a more active role in the future evolution of the Gripen system.
